Charlie is hired by English investors to investigate the forgery of French bonds emanating from a Parisian bank. Charlie's undercover agent, an Apache dancer, is murdered before she can disclose what she's learned. Despite this setback, Charlie welcomes the arrival of #1 son Lee, who proves a valuable ally to his father. The prime suspect is the ubiquitous Xavier, a crippled beggar and World War I veteran who seems to hold a grudge against the officials of the bank in question. When Yvette Lamartine, the daughter of the bank's president, is accused of murdering her ex-lover, a corrupt bank official, Charlie must temper his quest for the truth with chivalry.
